Last month, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) posted a safety alert for parents and caregivers about possible Cronobacter contamination concerns with a brand of powdered goat milk instant formula and other infant formula products imported and distributed by a company in Texas. The firm had already initiated a voluntary recall of these same products about a week before because they were not in compliance with all of FDA’s infant formula regulations.
According to the FDA safety alert:
Cronobacter is a bacterium that can cause bloodstream and central nervous system infections, such as sepsis and meningitis, respectively. Complications from Cronobacter infection in infants can include brain abscess, developmental delays, motor impairments, and death. Symptoms of Cronobacter infection in infants may include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice, grunting breaths, or abnormal body movements.
Fortunately, at the time the safety alert was published, FDA was not aware of any illnesses associated with the products. The agency advises parents and caregivers not to feed these infant formula products to infants under their care and to get immediate care for an infant experiencing Cronobacter infection symptoms.
Dedicated to helping companies identify microbial issues to prevent contaminated products from reaching consumers, and the high costs frequently associated with these types of recalls, are the scientists at MPL Laboratories. MPL operates an FDA registered and DEA licensed testing facility that offers cGMP and ISO 17025 compliant sterility and microbial testing services. These resources can be essential for testing raw ingredients, production processes and surfaces, and final products. These services are available to manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, regulatory agencies, health care providers and the general public.
