Both the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and Health Canada recently published information about the recall of a brand of hypoallergenic infant formula in each country. The manufacturer reported that the recall of specific batches of the infant formula was due to a possibility of contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii in product sampled outside of the United States.
According to the FDA recall notice:
Cronobacter bacteria can cause severe, life-threatening infections (sepsis) or meningitis (an inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spine). Symptoms of sepsis and meningitis may include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice (yellow skin and whites of the eyes), grunting breaths and abnormal movements. Cronobacter infection may also cause bowel damage and may spread through the blood to other parts of the body.
The products were sold by retail stores and consumers are advised to immediately stop using the recalled batches. Fortunately, the company had no reports of illnesses in either the United States or Canada at the time of the recall posting.
