The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) recently announced that several marijuana establishments were voluntarily recalling specific products due to possible contamination with a type of fungus known as
Aspergillus. Five different products from four cultivators are involved in the recall.
According to ADHS, the five products were found in laboratory tests to be positive for
Aspergillus. Fortunately, the agency also shared that at the time of the recall, no illnesses had been reported. ADHS has advised patients who have purchased the potentially contaminated products that they should not ingest, inhale or otherwise consume them.
Exposure to
Aspergillus can cause allergic reactions and even infections that can be life-threatening in some cases. Fortunately, milder, allergic forms of aspergillosis are more common than the invasive form of the infection. One of the milder forms is known as allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA). People with ABPA have a condition where the fungus causes allergic respiratory symptoms, such as wheezing and coughing, but does not actually invade and destroy tissue. On the other hand, invasive aspergillosis usually affects people with immune system problems. The fungus invades and damages tissue in the body. Invasive aspergillosis most commonly affects the lungs, but it can also cause infections in other organs and can spread throughout the body.
