Sparta, NJ, October 24th, 2017
Recently, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about a skin care and cosmetics company based in Santa Monica, California that voluntarily announced a product recall. Over 10,000 units of a shampoo are part of the recall taking place in the United States and Canada that was initiated due to microbial contamination concerns.
According to the FDA recall notice (recall number: F-3407-2017), the product was found to contain the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa at an average level of 108 bacteria per gram of product. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common type of bacteria that can cause disease in humans, animals and plants.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that serious Pseudomonas infections usually occur in people in the hospital and/or with weakened immune systems. However, the agency does state that healthy people can also develop mild illnesses from contact with the bacteria. Pseudomonas aeruginosa can enter the body through contact with cuts, open wounds or burns, before spreading and causing an infection.
To help prevent contaminated products from ever reaching consumers, MPL Laboratories is fully equipped and accredited to provide testing for a broad spectrum of microbes, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and other contaminants that could be present in cosmetics and personal care products. Testing takes place in MPL’s FDA registered and cGMP, ISO 17025 compliant laboratory. These services not only protect the public from exposure risks, they are also vital to prevent costly product recalls, damaging public relations and the expensive legal fees that companies that manufacture and distribute contaminated products that reach consumers often incur.
