The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted information about the voluntary recall of a body cream due to the potential for the product to contain high levels of yeast. The product is from a New York company and includes one lot of the body cream packaged in 4-ounce containers. Hundreds of units are part of the recall which had been distributed within the United States.
There are several ways that microorganisms, such as yeast, can get into cosmetics according to the FDA. These include:
- Contaminated raw materials, water, or other ingredients
- Poor manufacturing conditions
- Ingredients that encourage the growth of microorganisms, without an effective preservative system
- Packaging that doesn’t protect a product adequately
- Poor shipping or storage conditions
- Consumer use, such as the need to dip fingers into the product
The cosmetic testing experts at MPL Laboratories analyze a wide variety of raw and finished products for microbial contamination. Their scientists utilize a dedicated FDA and DEA registered facility that offers cGMP and ISO 17025 compliant microbiology testing of cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and other consumer goods. This product testing approach not only helps to protect consumers, it is also instrumental for helping companies avoid the expenses associated with product recalls. MPL’s testing services are available to manufacturers, packagers, importers, distributors, retailers, and regulatory agencies.
