A Texas company recently announced the recall of an antioxidant mouthwash that was distributed in the United States and Canada. The recall notice was published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) which specifically mentions potential microbiological contamination exceeding the specified criteria.
According to the recall and safety alert posted by the Government of Canada, “Some of the recalled products (lot #CU59) may have the presence of a common household microorganism, Pluralibacter gergoviae. Individuals with weakened immune systems, who suffer from a serious pre-existing condition, who have been treated surgically, or belong to another sensitive group of persons are at particular risk of infection if they use the contaminated product.”
Pluralibacter gergoviae, formerly known as Enterobacter gergoviae, is a Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) that is also an opportunistic pathogen. It has been associated with antibiotic-resistant outbreaks in hospitals and has been a recurrent contaminant in cosmetics and personal care products over the years. In fact, a body wash was recalled earlier this year due to concerns over this same microorganism.
