The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in conjunction with Health Canada, recently announced the recall of approximately 1.7 million window air conditioners due to the risk of mold exposure. The units were manufactured by a company in China and Thailand, and were sold in North America under 10 different brand names.
CPSC warns:
Pooled water in the air conditioners can fail to drain quickly enough, which can lead to mold growth. Mold exposure poses risks of respiratory issues or other infections to some consumers.
According to the U.S. recall notice, the manufacturer is aware of at least 152 reports of mold in the air conditioners, including 17 reports of consumers experiencing symptoms such as respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, and/or sore throats from mold exposure. Health Canada noted 5 reports of mold in the units, with no reports of symptoms.
The air conditioners were sold through retail chains and online from March 2020 through May of this year. Consumers with the recalled air conditioners are advised to immediately contact the manufacturer for a free repair or a full or prorated refund.
