Health Canada recently announced that two lots of a brand of organic cold and flu syrup had been recalled because the yeast content may be out of specification. The product was sold in Canada through various retail chains and online sources.
This recall was classified as a Type II by Health Canada, which means the use of, or exposure to, a recalled product may cause temporary adverse health consequences, or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote. According to the recall notice, consumers should consult with their healthcare provider if they have any health concerns.
There are numerous microorganisms that can grow and reproduce in or on many types of medicines and other consumer products. Microorganisms can impact the quality and shorten the shelf life of different goods. Some could even pose a serious health concern for consumers, especially for those with a weakened immune system.
Dedicated to helping to prevent contaminated OTC medicines, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and other consumer goods from reaching the public, and the high costs associated with these types of recalls, are the scientists at MPL Laboratories. Their product testing facility is FDA registered and DEA licensed and provides cGMP and ISO 17025 compliant sterility and microbiology testing. MPL’s services and expertise can be essential for assessing raw ingredients, production processes and surfaces, and final products.
