Last month, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about a company out of Milford, New York that announced a recall of some of their cheese products. In all, three different products are part of the recall taking place with retailers across the state of New York.
The recall was initiated due to microbial contamination concerns after testing conducted by both the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets (NYSDAM) and the food manufacturer found product positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
Fortunately, at the time of the recall notice there had been no reports of illness. This was welcome news since exposure to Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious health issues and even death in some circumstances. Had anyone become ill, the groups generally recognized as being most at risk include pregnant women, seniors and people with a weakened immune system. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that at least 90% of people who get Listeria infections are in a high risk group.
Helping to prevent contaminated foods, cosmetics, consumer products and pharmaceuticals from reaching the public are the scientists at MPL Laboratories. They offer advanced microbial testing to identify Listeria and other pathogens and contaminants. These testing services are also instrumental for evaluating cleaning and disinfection procedures at food processing and other types of production and manufacturing facilities.
In the event that an outbreak has already occurred, testing can facilitate the process of quickly pinpointing its source to prevent further product contamination and infections. These services not only protect the public from exposure risks, they are also vital to prevent costly product recalls, damaging public relations and the expensive legal fees that companies involved with manufacturing and distributing contaminated products may encounter.
